If you’ve seen the new Heineken ad, you’ll know why it’s all over the internet at the moment: in a nutshell, their ‘social experiment’ puts two deeply incompatible people together with the challenge to build a bar. The big twist is that although they have completely opposing views, they get to know each other and talk through their differences. N’aw.

We’re sure you’ll have much more in common with any dates you get to know this Spring  (Flirtify is a great way of finding people who share the same interests as you!), but it still got us thinking… maybe going on more ‘challenging’ dates will separate the wheat from the chaff, so to speak?

Sure, the chances of having people walk out on you may significantly increase, but the chances of a lukewarm date are dramatically decreased too. Think of it as a form of quality control.
If you’re bored of the coffee/cinema status-quo, here are 10 more testing date ideas that you could try (use at your own risk):

1.    Rock Climbing

Source
You know those office trust exercises where you fall back and expect people to catch you? Rock climbing is basically one of those, especially if your date is expected to belay for you (essentially anchor you to the ground).

This idea will test your date on a multitude of levels; you can monitor their strength, and their reaction to your consistent sweating. You can also watch their crisis management skills kick into gear as you have a panic attack 10 feet off the ground.

2.    Quirky Restaurants…

Source
If you’re looking for more than the usual meat and two veg, why not go for a more bizarre dining experience? There are plenty of weird choices out there - micro courses, insect bars, dining in the dark – you name it.

Though the menu might not be to your appetite, at least you’ll always have something to talk about. And who knows: maybe a bowl of charcoal–infused carrots will bring you closer together.

3.    …or maybe even Cooking Together

Source
Once you’ve found your way around their gas oven (who has one of those anymore?!) you’re all ready to create a candlelit masterpiece for two; why not make it a bit more interesting?

Whether you turn it into a ‘Come Dine With Me’-style competition, or try cooking together, there’s only one golden rule – no food poisoning (especially if you’re planning on staying the night).

4.    Gool ol’ DIY

Source
Whether you’re building a bar or a BILLY bookcase, we all know the IKEA experience can come with its unique set of arguments, folded right into the flat-pack. However, if your date can withstand home improvements from day one, you know you have a keeper.

If there are any quick fixes you need around the house, this idea is a win-win: although the relationship might not, a good paint job lasts forever.

5.    Escape Games

Source
Stockholm syndrome aside, the wave of escape game experiences flooding the UK are the closest things you can get date-wise to a psychometric test. Feel exhilarated as you are literally chained into a room with someone you may not know anything about.

This is a great opportunity to get anything awkward you haven’t mentioned yet out into the open. It’s also a great date idea for people with the mutual interest of dystopian nightmares.

6.    Life Drawing

Source
What could ease the romantic tension better than sitting in a room and staring at someone else’s naked body? It’s an opportunity to show off your artistic prowess/appreciation for the human form, and it’s also really really funny.

If you’re ready to increase the risk, why not suggest taking turns modelling?

7.    Karaoke

Source
Friends of 500 Days of Summer rejoice; Karaoke is a great date idea for extroverts nationwide. What’s more, it’s very future-focused: a test of the quality of shower-singing and road trip playlists to come.

This way, even if the relationship doesn’t work out, you can at least be the next Fleetwood Mac.

8.    Horror film marathon

Source
Today’s streaming services boast a vibrant, diverse choice of cinematic experiences; instead of the The Notebook this Friday night, why not watch something that tests your reflexes? Our suggestions include The Shining, Carrie, The Blair Witch Project and The Human Centipede.

Challenge your better half to Netflix and Thrill (see what we did there?) and wait to see who cracks first.

9.    Unplug for the day

Source
It might not seem like much of a challenge in theory, but give this one a go: no phones, no tablets, no distractions from awkward silences. Your granddad would be proud.

Who knows, your time together may benefit from relying on good, old-fashioned face-to-face communication - as long as they’re into strict rule-enforcement.

10.    Meeting the inlaws

Source
Basically the biggest challenge of all, meeting their parents is like a triathlon: if you’ve managed to dodge the awkward hug/handshake mix-ups and avoid politics at the dinner table, you might fall at the last hurdle by forgetting their names… Remember it’s all about endurance.

For the big thrill-seekers, wear something subtly inappropriate and unexpectedly declare you’re a vegan at the last minute.

If you’re in a relationship for the long-haul, you’re probably well aware that the Honeymoon Period comes and goes quicker than you’d probably like to admit. But that’s life, eh: when sexy underwear gets replaced with a multi-car insurance policy and a slow cooker, you know you’ve moved on to the next stage of your relationship.

Nonetheless, here arise some definite perks: what's more, this often means your significant other becomes more and more like your best pal. And that’s completely worth the constant bickering over who unloads the dishwasher, trust us.

They may not have been featured in Shakespeare’s sonnets, but here are 10 ways that being in a relationship is the best, even without the romance:

1. Sharing food

Source
This is by far the best part of being in a relationship: at a restaurant and can’t decide what you want to eat? No worries: order two plates and swap halfway through.

For the terminal unromantics, make sure you make a clear 50-50 separation on your plate before you start eating.

2. Using them as an excuse

Source
Forgot to pay the rent? Being particularly rubbish at texting back? You can blame everything on your significant other, without them even knowing. Apologising for their tardiness is quicker and easier than actually admitting personal responsibility.

Just don’t forget, this is a mutual agreement; after a few years, your friends will definitely begin to wonder why you put up with how pathetic you make your partner out to be – and vice versa.

3. Being able to let yourself go

Source
Arguably the most challenging part of being in a long-term relationship is coming to terms with how you’ve managed to double your collective body weight since the day you met. Cue identity crisis.

But in all honesty, it just means you’re super comfortable around another human being; the illusion has finally been shed, and it’s fantastic. You let those leg hairs breathe, girl.

4. Presents get good

When you eat, sleep and binge-watch next to someone for a significant amount of time, you have plenty of opportunities to master the subtle hint; it can be quite life changing, getting presents from someone who knows what you already have and what you genuinely want/need. Gift receipts become a thing of the past.

Not only this, but presents can get more and more practical; it might feel like the end of romance as you know it, but there’s a bittersweet joy in receiving that set of wiper blades you’ve been needing for ages.

5. Cooking is easier

Source
Anyone who cooks for one knows the struggle; portion control goes out of the window. Either you end up chucking a significant portion of your handiwork away, or you end up eating the same sodding shepherd’s pie every night for the rest of the week.

It’s hard to hear, but most recipe books don’t cater to the singleton market: cooking for two increases your options, distributes the labour, and also saves the planet from food waste. Win-win-win.

6. Borrowing their stuff

Source
Not only are you blessed in sharing their company for – fingers crossed – the rest of your life, you also get to share all of their possessions: TVs, more expensive furniture, subscription services, even underwear, if you’re daring.

Being in a relationship basically means you double your amount of possessions- as long as you don’t mind the action figure/antique coin collections coming along for the ride too.

7. They’re willing to listen to your every thought

Source
Fancy yourself as a James Joyce? You’ve finally found that one person who will put up with your no-longer-internal monologue all day, every day. They know that their contribution may not be valued, and yet they want to take it all in anyway.

They might even call you out on some of your crappier/more irrational behaviour, leaving you as a more stable, rounded individual. Aw.

8. Road Trips are 100% better

Source
Whether you’re partaking in Route 66 or the obligatory drive-through hangover run, travelling gets instantly better. Not only do you have someone to 50-50 the actual driving with, but your counterpart can offer many other skills, like DJing, navigating, snack sharing, and most importantly keeping you awake.

We’re surprised that having a significant other isn’t a requirement on your insurance policy by now.

9. Candid photo taking

Source
It sounds narcissistic, but here lies a golden opportunity; when you’re tired of the selfie, you can arrange for your non-judgemental partner in crime to take a completely natural-looking, completely staged shot for your Instagram.

Not only does it give the illusion that another human being actually thought you’d make a fascinating subject, you can also give it 50 different tries to ensure you get the angle of your chin just right.

10. Having someone rooting for you every single day

Source
Okay, so this one is kinda romantic: there’s nothing more confidence-boosting and life-affirming than having someone who consistently has your back. Every one of your flaws all of a sudden has the miraculous potential to be endearing. It’s an awful cliché, but when you find someone who will support you through both good and bad times, every day gets a little bit easier. Whether you’re facing a drastic career change, family issues, or a charity 10k, there’s nothing more reassuring than facing it together with someone who knows your every thought and every quirk.

Combine all of this with the occasional romantic renaissance, and maybe the dreaded ‘post-honeymoon period’ doesn’t look too bleak after all.

Valentine’s Day or as it’s called in the land of the singleton – Tuesday.
Dating has become very weird. Sprinkle it with busy schedules and the fact that you don’t have an advanced degree in psychology, you’ll start to understand just what it’s like to date these days.
Before you dive into this confusing world we’ve created an online profile language table so you know what they really mean!

Now for the good bit. Here are the most common stages of online dating and what to expect, we’ve also thrown in a few tips to help you out! Good luck.

Stage 1. Kid in a Candy Shop

Overwhelmed by the feeling you get when you realise there are a bazillion single people like you in your local area? Check out everyone who passes by in public, at the supermarket, the coffee shop, in traffic? Catch yourself zoning out mid-sentence while eating with your friends because a 10/10 just walked in? You probably have the courage to speak to exactly 0 of these people, but still, you noticed. This is good!

Stage 2. High Hopes & Higher Standards

You’ve probably created a list of what you will and won’t accept from a partner. The list is long, detailed and covers everything you want from career status to number of pets. You mould your dating profile around this, making it clear you love to travel but don’t want to leave the house, quirky yet grounded, successful but not too successful and is into sex but never had it.

Stage 3. First Dates

Your profile hooked some promising bites, you’ve bypassed the small talk and it’s time for some dates. You pick the go-to venue (Nando’s) over and over again; the staff probably knows your order like the back of their hand. You smile and nod at the right time, check your phone when it gets awkward and agree to meet up again. You’re not rushing though! Just seeing what’s out there!

Stage 4. Last minute mistakes

When you finish your date, don’t ruin things just as you’re on your path to salvation. Send a thank you text and go with the flow from there. If you don’t hear from them for a day or two after, don’t panic. Coming across as clingy or lacking in confidence may scare off what could have been a happily ever after.

It can be hard, when you so badly want to find “the one,” but getting to know another person takes time and patience. Stick with it, execute these tips and tricks and you’ll be well on your way to relationship status!
Good Luck!

We're the generation of the online date, sexting and supposed 'hook-up culture' but it turns out that we, that’s millennials and iGen individuals (those born in the 90's) just aren't having that much sex. Tell us about it!

New research has revealed that, compared to, Generation Xers (AKA the parents) are the real Generation Sexers. This just awkward!

Yes, the research found that 15% of young adults (20-24 year olds) have reportedly had no sexual partners since turning 18. This is up from 6% in the previous generation.

More… Sexual inactivity apparently has increased more for women than for men and is different depending on your race, education level and geographical location.

Why? Well, it's likely to do with money, or, lack of it.

Lead researcher of the study, Jean Twenge said that the findings form "part of a general theme of later maturation that's been pretty well-documented".

What we hear is that it doesn't suck enough that we’re less likely to have jobs and are more likely to live with our parents but now all that means we’re less likely to be in the "mood" for sex.

Another possibility is that because we’re glued to our phones we’re missing opportunities to meet people around us – presumably when we’re not glued to the Flirtify app that is - or it could quite simply be that there's so many more ways to entertain ourselves without anyone else these days. Pokémon Go, we’re looking at you!

Glued to your phone? Download the Fliritfy app today – it’s free too! WIN. WIN.

Summer truly is the season for fun, flirting and frolics. To keep you sizzling all summer find someone to share the long summer evenings with now with Flirtify ❤️

Love is synonymous with summer. Summer lovin’ had me a blast as they say… as the temperature rises outside, it seems that a lot of people start to enjoy the dating process, with more fun outdoorsy dates and chance meetings with new and interesting people. Moods are lifted and whilst Christmas and New Year are all about family and friends, summer can be about whomever you want it to be (exciting times!).

Dating is certainly an all-year-round phenomenon and you know we are all for starting the conversation regardless of the temperature outside! But we do think that there is something to be said for finding romance in summer, and here’s why…

1. More people are out
At the first sight of sunshine, we all can’t help but lose our outer layers and head for the nearest beer garden – it’s a natural human response. As more people leave the safety of their sofas and box-sets behind, we naturally begin planning the summers events and with it begin the chance of meeting new and exciting people!

2. People are happier
You can’t help but smile on a beautiful sunny day, and these positive summer vibes are great for being more up for new things and meeting new people.

Professor Holick, of the University of Michigan said, “Being outside readjusts your outlook. The sun represses melatonin levels, making you feel alert, open to new ideas, and willing to put yourself in unfamiliar territory.”

Spontaneity is in the air and there are so many new adventures to be had…

3. Fun date ideas
Leave your mittens home and ditch the scarves, forget ice-skates and dinner dates and think BBQ, picnics and bike rides! Rediscover where you live with food or a drink at a new location. It needn’t be expensive though – long walks or backyard parties come with minimal costs so you can keep mingling!

4. More time to date
Summer means more daylight hours which means that you can leave work with hours of daylight to enjoy your dates, rather than not seeing the light of day.

5. Summer confidence
Suns outs, guns out! It’s tough to feel attractive wearing more layers than an Eskimo all wrapped up in your scarf, hat and gloves! Summer means beautiful summer dress and shorts. ‘Tis the season to flatter your best features!

Although these are all great reasons why summer is a great time to date – the most obvious reason is that there really is no time like the present.

Have you ever stopped to wonder why?

Growing up, we all watched eagerly as our favourite characters, from Cinderella to Scarlett O'Hara and Sleeping Beauty (although she was asleep so technically it’s not the same) closed their eyes and did it - smooched their prince.

But chances are during our first kiss (next to the school gym at 15), when we first did it ourselves we weren't thinking about them and what they did. We just did it anyway because it felt natural; instinctive...

Why?

Before we tell you we wondered if it (quite unromantically) was simply due to an inability to focus on something that close-up to your face. But it doesn't...

So we asked the scientists instead;

Apparently, we shut our eyes when we kiss because our brains are unable to process visual data at the same time as the physical sensations coming from our lips and tongues.
Kissing is complicated business!

Interestingly, the research for the Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Perception and Performance, didn't entail any kissing at all.

Instead participants carried out a visual task whilst also having to respond to small vibrations applied to their hands. As the tasks got more intense, the psychologists found the 'touch sense' declined.

Closer: find out what your kissing style reveals about you relationships.

"If we are focusing strongly on a visual task, this will reduce our awareness of stimuli in other senses," Polly told The Sunday Times. But sometimes people would rather focus on the physical over the visual, like when kissing or having sex.

Next time you find yourself locking lips with someone, think about it, if you’re not too distracted which we almost hope you are because that would be a-whole-other thing for your 'otherwise occupied' brain to be concentrating on!

Pucker up xx

Glad we could help Bruno x

We like to bring you interesting news and facts on all things relationship and dating here at Flirtify. So what's the latest... sofa psychology.

According to a recent study the way you choose to sit on your sofa says a lot more about you that you think - from how likely you are to be successful at work, to how happy you are with your sex life!

The recent study by Worldstores has revealed how you can predict how satisfied someone is with a number of lifestyle factors including their sex life, where they live, their career and even how much they are likely to earn – simply by looking at how they sit and relax on their sofa.

Along with leading body language experts, the study looked at common lifestyle and personality traits of 2,000 people against their favourite sofa sitting positions.

Understanding your sofa psychology…

Most likely to be successful: Legs tucked up, feet on the cushion, leaning into the arm and the back of the sofa AKA ‘The Tucking Leaner’

Most likely to earn the most: Widespread legs and arms extended to their fullest across the sofa back. An over exaggerated and confident position AKA ‘The Loud And Proud’

Most likely to have the most sex: Crossed legs and hands resting in the lap - well rounded and symmetrical, reflecting an overall contentment and inner confidence AKA ‘The Sofa Buddha’

Most likely to dislike your job: Fully stretched out, almost horizontal; similar to being asleep and fully committed to relaxing as much as possible. AKA ‘The Rose’ after being very similar to Rose during the intimate scene from Titanic.

Despite being open for the world to see, our social media world is usually the last line of secrecy when it comes to our relationships.

Our direct messages past and present, Facebook chats and Instagram history are securely - for now - ours. Yet a new survey on the '50 secrets to a happy marriage' has revealed that sharing your social media passwords with your loved one is a key way to find peace and security in a relationship. So, how do you feel about sharing your social media world?

Would you let your other half in on your log-ins?

Tell us now, vote in out poll @FlirtifyUK

One of the problems with dating apps like Tinder and Hinge (we say one, because there’s plenty) is a lack of accountability – a lot of people simply use it as a hook up site and poof they’re gone, never to be seen again.

Simply put it's just too easy to be a complete jerk and continue to get away with it.
So what do we do about it? Well in an attempt to eliminate the bad apples from online dating there is a new dating app on the scene which allows users to leave reviews.

The Grade, launched last year aims to provide a dating service ‘creep’ free, and therefore more women friendly – their words not ours.

While this idea might make sense, it still comes with its own set of concerns. But all these boil down to one main question: how do you stop falsely negative review, mistaken identity, horrid comments and those exes? How do you stop people from trashing someone they have a grudge against?

To get around this The Grade won’t allow any freeform text and instead will ask questions like, “Is this a ‘quality’ person?" That's it.

The thinking is that combing through a dating app to leave one bad “yes/no” user review on your ex doesn’t seem particularly fun, even for the most vindictive among us!

The Grade then takes the sum of all these “yes/no” answers and gives your profile a grade.
So far we’re told 85% of the reviews have been positive – but would you risk it?

Makers think, in some form, that this is the next logical step of dating apps. Someone has to deal with the fact that dating apps often devolve into an intensely hostile place for women, we were told.

What do you think - would you want people to be able to rate you as a date for all the world to see?

Flirtify - let's start fresh

The taxi-network firm Uber has launched a new car-pooling system, letting strangers share group ride - and it’s fast being hailed as the latest dating fad.

UberPool allows passengers heading in the same direction to save on the standard taxi fare by jumping in with one another. Yes it might take slightly longer to get where you want to go, but it’s much cheaper and there are some other surprising benefits apparently, like LOVE!

It’s only a matter of weeks since it launched but it’s already been hailed ‘Tinder for passengers’ – well we don’t know about that and if in fact we’d want that label but with numerous strangers connecting in the back it might explain the service’s burgeoning popularity!

One driver who calls himself ‘Uber Cupid’ said, ‘Men and women – they can meet in my taxi and who knows what might happen? Two nights ago, I had
two drop-offs that, in the space of the 20-minute drive, became just one...’

This all sounds very romantic-ish. The concept of a beautiful man or woman arriving, a clean car, you’re chatting and the time flies. Why wouldn’t you continue to get to know one another over a drink? And if that beautiful man or woman happens to not be so great you can always get out - so the possibilities seem very exciting.

Uber have been careful to highlight their ‘safety first’ message. Ahead of the launch, the company set up a safety checklist that pops up when you open the app. It allows you to track your car’s arrival, confirm the driver’s ID, then share your ETA’ with a friend. It even allows them to track your progress on a live map.

Drivers have also had their concerns writing to Uber to request that drivers be allowed to opt
out of the service if they’d prefer.

It’s hard to focus on potential issues here, so will you be giving it a go? Either way, it’s definitely better than a night bus.

Staying safe... Kristiana Wrixon, from charity the Suzy LamplughTrust, advises, ‘All ride-sharing apps involve safety concerns. A stranger could potentially learn things about you – where you live, whether you live alone. If you use them, try to buddy up with a friend and tell them when you’re leaving, where you’re going, what time you’ll arrive and ask them to check in with you at the other end.’

Stay safe out there Flirtify x

Like all good things it has its downsides and its moments – the auto correct function is brilliant – but without proper supervision it can take a serious toll on your dating life…

Sharing too much
This auto-correct is possibly the worst thing you could say to a potential date, ever!

When you should have skipped breakfast
Your intentions were good wanting to meet your date for breakfast, but your message couldn’t be more tragic!

Nothing worse than a needy nerd
And we think nerdy could be taken badly!

I don’t think you’re an idiot, honest
When a simple reply isn’t so simple…

When the pressure is just too much
Probably something you should have discussed eeek!

Thank you Facebook!!!!

The only thing worse than breaking up with the person you once couldn’t imagine life without is stumbling across either one, posts of you both in happier times or two, posts of them with their new ‘someone special’ on Facebook.

If it wasn’t bad enough to deal with the heartbreak and sometimes betrayal, nowadays we’re also forced to make big decisions about whether to block or unfriend them – que Facebook.

Facebook to the rescue!

Facebook has stepped in, trialling new tools to make it less painful to be reminded of relationships which are, well kaput.

Don’t want the new guy you’re dating to snoop on your previous relationship? Ta dah! You’ll be able to digitally hide that part of your life (digitally only we’re afraid, we’re not miracle workers). This optional feature will allow you to edit who can see our past posts with an ex and un-tag yourself from posts with that person.

Here’s how...

When users change their relationship status to reflect a break-up they will be prompted to try certain tools. Once implemented, your ex will no longer be suggested when writing a new message or be tagged in photos. This clever little tool will also let you limit the photos, videos or status updates that a former partner will see from you.

Facebook product manager, Kelly Winters posted the news on the sites page saying, ‘We are testing tools to help people manage how they interact with their former partners on Facebook after a relationship has ended’

She explains the work is on-going (in an effort to save us from further heartache) for people who ‘may be going through difficult moments in their lives.’

Facebook knows all about our love lives.

‘We hope these tools will help people end relationships on Facebook with greater ease, comfort and sense of control,’ she added.

Here’s when...

These tools are only available in the US we’re afraid for the moment. They’re currently being tested on mobile devices before Facebook decides whether or not to roll them out to its 1.5 billion users worldwide.

So, if you’re not quite ready to hit the “block” button but you like the sound of eradicating any proof that your previous relationship existed from Facebook, this tool might just help.

Read our tips on how to help when your friend is going through a break-up.

Flirtify - Let's Get Together

…but one no one really wants to have to deal with.

We've all been there; the guy or girl you’re dating just goes quiet. No explanation. No contact. No nothing.
The term ‘ghosting’ is being used more frequently but is in face relatively new – ‘ghosting’ is a new verb that refers to ending a romantic relationship by cutting off all contact and ignoring all attempts of contact.
A recent survey found that from 185 people that approximately 14% of men and 27% of women had been ghosts at some point in their lives.

This phenomenon isn't new - prehistoric daters sat by their phones (those attached to the wall) waiting for their romantic interests to call, and assumed that call must have come when he or she was out of the house. But in an era of dating apps like Tinder and OKCupid when matchmaking often happens by swiping right and left makes potential daters literally disposable so ghosting has become much more common.

The Ease Of App's And Online Dating Has Allowed Ghosting To Take A New Form
Logan Levkoff, sexologist and expert from shows like "Married At First Sight" explained that online dating and apps take the humanity out of the process a bit, which could make users prone to being ghosted. "[Because] all it takes is a swipe," she said. "The quantity [of how many people experience ghosting] is more because it's so easy to do and it requires very little human engagement in order to do it."

Because Breaking Up Is Hard
We don’t actually like it - a study done in 2012 reported that there are seven types of breakup strategies with confrontation being ‘the best way to breakup’, and ghosting the least ideal method to end a relationship. A more recent study reported the same finding suggesting we still feel the same. Only 13% of 1,000 adults consider breaking up electronically ‘very appropriate’ or ‘somewhat appropriate’.
So Why Are So Many People Experiencing ‘Ghosting’?
Our feelings change about a lot of things... about a band, about a food, about certain things you thought were fun that you don’t think are fun anymore and it’s ok for this to happen in a relationship but be a grown up about it.
R-E-S-P-E-C-T
Levkoff said that it’s nice to be able to say to someone, 'Listen I've enjoyed getting to know you, but I don't think this is going to move forward in a romantic way,' because you’re being up front and honest to them and yourself. Would you want to be left staring at your phone for the next fortnight wondering if you’ve done something wrong?
Is Ghosting Morally Wrong?
Yes, lack of response from someone you like feels rubbish! It's a cowardly move.

What We Think
Ghosting – it’s actually just rudeness dressed up
It seems even celebrities the last people who you’d think could slip away aren’t immune to getting ghosted. Reports suggest Charlize Theron broke up with Sean Penn recently by ghosting him - and they were actually engaged to be married - friends say she thought it was the simplest solution to stop responding to his calls!
What The Experts Say
It’s not you, it’s them - time is better spent moving on to the next.
Have you ever experienced ‘ghosting’ or have you been the ‘ghost’?
