By Sam at Flirtify

If you’ve seen the new Heineken ad, you’ll know why it’s all over the internet at the moment: in a nutshell, their ‘social experiment’ puts two deeply incompatible people together with the challenge to build a bar. The big twist is that although they have completely opposing views, they get to know each other and talk through their differences. N’aw.

We’re sure you’ll have much more in common with any dates you get to know this Spring  (Flirtify is a great way of finding people who share the same interests as you!), but it still got us thinking… maybe going on more ‘challenging’ dates will separate the wheat from the chaff, so to speak?

Sure, the chances of having people walk out on you may significantly increase, but the chances of a lukewarm date are dramatically decreased too. Think of it as a form of quality control.
If you’re bored of the coffee/cinema status-quo, here are 10 more testing date ideas that you could try (use at your own risk):

1.    Rock Climbing

Source
You know those office trust exercises where you fall back and expect people to catch you? Rock climbing is basically one of those, especially if your date is expected to belay for you (essentially anchor you to the ground).

This idea will test your date on a multitude of levels; you can monitor their strength, and their reaction to your consistent sweating. You can also watch their crisis management skills kick into gear as you have a panic attack 10 feet off the ground.

2.    Quirky Restaurants…

Source
If you’re looking for more than the usual meat and two veg, why not go for a more bizarre dining experience? There are plenty of weird choices out there - micro courses, insect bars, dining in the dark – you name it.

Though the menu might not be to your appetite, at least you’ll always have something to talk about. And who knows: maybe a bowl of charcoal–infused carrots will bring you closer together.

3.    …or maybe even Cooking Together

Source
Once you’ve found your way around their gas oven (who has one of those anymore?!) you’re all ready to create a candlelit masterpiece for two; why not make it a bit more interesting?

Whether you turn it into a ‘Come Dine With Me’-style competition, or try cooking together, there’s only one golden rule – no food poisoning (especially if you’re planning on staying the night).

4.    Gool ol’ DIY

Source
Whether you’re building a bar or a BILLY bookcase, we all know the IKEA experience can come with its unique set of arguments, folded right into the flat-pack. However, if your date can withstand home improvements from day one, you know you have a keeper.

If there are any quick fixes you need around the house, this idea is a win-win: although the relationship might not, a good paint job lasts forever.

5.    Escape Games

Source
Stockholm syndrome aside, the wave of escape game experiences flooding the UK are the closest things you can get date-wise to a psychometric test. Feel exhilarated as you are literally chained into a room with someone you may not know anything about.

This is a great opportunity to get anything awkward you haven’t mentioned yet out into the open. It’s also a great date idea for people with the mutual interest of dystopian nightmares.

6.    Life Drawing

Source
What could ease the romantic tension better than sitting in a room and staring at someone else’s naked body? It’s an opportunity to show off your artistic prowess/appreciation for the human form, and it’s also really really funny.

If you’re ready to increase the risk, why not suggest taking turns modelling?

7.    Karaoke

Source
Friends of 500 Days of Summer rejoice; Karaoke is a great date idea for extroverts nationwide. What’s more, it’s very future-focused: a test of the quality of shower-singing and road trip playlists to come.

This way, even if the relationship doesn’t work out, you can at least be the next Fleetwood Mac.

8.    Horror film marathon

Source
Today’s streaming services boast a vibrant, diverse choice of cinematic experiences; instead of the The Notebook this Friday night, why not watch something that tests your reflexes? Our suggestions include The Shining, Carrie, The Blair Witch Project and The Human Centipede.

Challenge your better half to Netflix and Thrill (see what we did there?) and wait to see who cracks first.

9.    Unplug for the day

Source
It might not seem like much of a challenge in theory, but give this one a go: no phones, no tablets, no distractions from awkward silences. Your granddad would be proud.

Who knows, your time together may benefit from relying on good, old-fashioned face-to-face communication - as long as they’re into strict rule-enforcement.

10.    Meeting the inlaws

Source
Basically the biggest challenge of all, meeting their parents is like a triathlon: if you’ve managed to dodge the awkward hug/handshake mix-ups and avoid politics at the dinner table, you might fall at the last hurdle by forgetting their names… Remember it’s all about endurance.

For the big thrill-seekers, wear something subtly inappropriate and unexpectedly declare you’re a vegan at the last minute.

We believe that shopping doesn’t have to be dull and boring, but can help you get to know your date a lot better! And, Cardiff offers a wonderful alternative to modern shopping centres, particularly within the gorgeous Edwardian and Victorian arcades, along with the fantastic Central Market. From beautiful antiques to hand-crafted Welsh love spoons (oh yes!), the arcades literally sell anything. Take a break from browsing and enjoy a spot of afternoon tea in one of the lovely cafes, before heading to one of our favourite shops in the city, Spillers Records. With the title of oldest record store in the world, it was established in 1894 and specialises in independent music from all genres. Get lost in the racks of vinyl and find out about each other’s music tastes… it might be a deal-breaker!!

Cardiff city centre is renowned for its nightlife and every weekend sees a huge influx of stag and hen parties, as well as locals from the surrounding valleys, descending on the city centre. The most popular venues can be found on St. Mary Street, Mill Lane and Greyfriars Road, with a massive choice of bars and clubs to suit every occasion. If you don’t fancy the clubbing delights of the East End then Cardiff has a fantastic array of large venues, which attract world-class touring shows and music productions. The MotorpointArena hosts major gigs and the Wales Millennium Centre is the venue for fantastic musical concerts, whilst the New Theatre presents the best in performing arts. Trentham Gardens

Stoke might not be renowned for its beautiful landscapes and luxurious woodlands, but Trentham Gardens is an absolute diamond in the rough! Set within 300 acres of pure loveliness, you’ll find shops, restaurants, cafes, pristine gardens, boat rides, romantic lakeside paths and secret woodland trails to keep you busy. Bars & Restaurants

Whether it’s a casual lunch date, a quick drink or a romantic evening meal, there is quite simply, something for everyone. Top of our picks is the recently refurbished Orange Tree Bar & Grill on Newcastle Road. Housed in a Georgian listed building with a contemporary glass extension to the side, they serve high-quality cuisine at very reasonable prices. From juicy steaks and delicious seafood, to mouth-watering desserts, you’re guaranteed a meal to remember in a relaxed and friendly environment… plus, the cocktails are AMAZING!

For something in the city centre, it has to be The Exchange in Hanley. Formerly Fat Cats Bar, this unique venue houses a bar and restaurant upstairs, a vintage shop in the reception and a music venue in the basement! Serving the best drinks, cocktails and food, plus special gigs and club nights, The Exchange has it all.

Culture

Situated roughly halfway between Birmingham and Manchester, you could be forgiven for overlooking the cultural offerings of Stoke-on-Trent… until now! With a rich and diverse history, we love the local museums, galleries and theatres because they make bloomin' fantastic dates!

Wander around the Staffordshire Hoard at The Potteries Museum and you’ll never be stuck for conversation or have those awkward silences. Enjoy a world-class production at The Regent Theatre - one of the biggest in the UK and with the best touring shows direct from the West End. Or try your hand at throwing a pot with Gladstone Pottery Museum… we swear, it’ll be just like that scene from Ghost!

Alton Towers

Though technically not in Stoke-on-Trent itself, Alton Towers is still classed as a local attraction and deserves a special mention because it’s one of our faves! For those who don’t know – and there’s not that many – Alton Towers is the UK’s biggest and best theme park. With something for everyone, from adventurous thrill-seekers to those with slightly more delicate stomachs, it’s a dating paradise! Get your hearts pumping with the ultimate thrill rides and rollercoasters or sit back and enjoy a live show, romantic sky ride or a spin on the teacups! The resort also has a brilliantly themed hotel and water park if you want to make a weekend of it and splash out…

So, forget what you think you know about Stoke-on-Trent. Find a date with Flirtify and get exploring!>>
Bristol is a hub of music and culture, there is so much to see and do that choosing that perfect date venue can be a little overwhelming. But never fear we’re here to help! We’ve listed our favourite date venues in the city...

The Watershed
Classic cinema date at The Watershed, a beautiful cross-art form venue. With 3 screens showing mainly art house films, it’s perfect for film lovers looking for an alternative to the bigger chain cinemas. It also has a lively café/bar area where locally sourced food is served up.

Catch a film and follow up with a glass of wine overlooking the Harbourside.
Brunel’s SS Great Britain
Not your typically romantic date venue, but stepping back in time on board the Brunel’s SS Great Britain is a wonderful experience and will provide plenty of conversation! Experience the sights, sounds and smells of life on board for Victorian passengers and crew and descend under water below the glass  ‘sea'; to touch the world’s first great ocean liner.

A great showcase of British Industrial History!

A Pint (or two) at the Grain Barge
After the above educational activity, stroll towards the Grain Barge – a converted barge moored in the Bristol Harbour. Owned and supplied by the award winning Bristol Beer Factory brewery, they serve up a variety of local craft beers as well as a select few from Devon and Cornwall. Head to top deck to enjoy your pint with some spectacular panoramic views.

Bristol Zoo Gardens
Love visiting the zoo as a kid? It’s totally acceptable to have a Zoo Date, wandering around Bristol Zoo’s 12 acre gardens and visiting the 400 species of animals is a lovely way to spend your day. Don’t forget to visit the gift shop too for that little memento of your date (cuddly meerkats, fridge magnets etc…)

Breakfast at The Lockside Restaurant
A waterfront café, Lockside Restaurant serves up one of the best breakfasts in the city! With views of the Clifton Suspension Bridge, it’s a lovely friendly (and relaxed) atmosphere, perfect for a breakfast date. We love the Lockside Classics, particularly their smoked salmon with poached eggs and bubble & squeak – yum! And hey, be a bit cheeky and wash your breakfast down with a glass of Bucks Fizz – it is a date after all.

Day Trip to Steep Holm Island
A little bit out of the way, but if you’ve got a day date and some time to spare, book yourselves onto a trip to Steep Holm Island. This privately owned island sits in the Bristol Channel about 5 miles off-shore from Weston-Super-Mare. The beautiful surrounding nature in this isolated haven is romance at its best. It’s also home to the remains of a 12th century Augustinian Priory for those of us that enjoy a little history time!

Cocktails at The Milk Thistle
“We pride ourselves on being purveyors of the finest cocktails in the city…”

Housed in one of Bristol’s finest historic buildings, the atmosphere at The Milk Thistle is just as intoxicating as the cocktails they serve up. We’d recommend the Milk Thistle Daisy; a mix of Tanqueray Export Gin, Lemon Juice, and Spiced Pear Syrup, royally topped with Fizz. The ultimate in cocktail indulgence.
For a decadent experience in Bristol’s best kept secret, it has to be The Milk Thistle…

Dinner at Flinty Red
And finally, keep it simple with an elegant dinner date at Flinty Reds. This wine tasting and award winning restaurant, change their menu daily and have a large selection of wine by the glass and carafe. They take their food and wine VERY seriously, so expect a full on dining experience, perfect for that special date.

So now you know where to go, head to Flirtify and find your date!
