We’re complete suckers for stats here at Flirtify – especially when the figures suggest that over half of people in the UK are single! But, what do the numbers really mean, where do these people live and how long can we play with the snazzy interactive map before we have to get back to work?!
According to a report from The Office for National
Statistics (ONS) based on responses from the 2011 Census, more than 51% of the
UK population are single – a rise from 47% in 2001.
Across the country, the concentration of single people
varied massively from 92% in Headingley (Leeds) compared to just 29% in Greater
Marlow (Buckinghamshire); whilst in Scotton (Richmondshire), 85% of single people
were male!
Now before you single ladies all head to the North
Yorkshire village on the hunt for love, we should mention a few things… most
notably, that the definition of ‘single’ in this report is anyone who is not
married. So, that includes those who are divorced, widowed or are shacked up
but unmarried (sorry!) In other words, a cohabiting couple in Manchester who
have lived together for 5 years and list themselves as ‘In a Relationship’ on
Facebook, would be classed as single. Furthermore, that haven of single men in
Scotton is actually home to the British Army’s largest garrison of soldiers in
the world - so, the figures are slightly skewed! (We’re still going though…)
In actual fact, if you consider cohabiting couples as not
being single, then the real figures are below 40%! However, that’s still a lot
of single folks all looking for the same thing – so what are you waiting for?
