Friends is 21 Years Old: Here’s what it Taught us About Love…

I don’t know about you but I still laugh like each joke is entirely new, I always find myself smiling when I hear the words ‘I’ll be there for you….’ and I would happily watch TV repeats all day long.

Friends taught us so much, especially when it came to their confusing, emotional, life-altering, hilarious and realistic situations. Here are a few of our favourite life lessons…

A Break’ vs ‘Break Up’*

*We’d like to take this opportunity to say we still don’t know who we completely agree with.

When Rachel told Ross she thought they should go on a break in season 3, Ross hooks up with ‘the girl from the copy place’. This is a lesson in communication, let us help:
Break – means a brief breather from one another (but your commitment still stands).
Break Up – it’s over.
Proposing, marriage and children are scary and emotional

Since it’s typically the man’s role to propose, us ladies aren’t always aware of what’s happening until it’s actually happening and as Monica points out ‘There’s a reason girls don’t do this!’

But ladies this is a true lesson in perspective, and the modern day - understand this is a scary time and your partner is putting their heart and everything they know on the line…. put him out of his misery and yes right away, if that is your answer.
Sometimes the right person is there all along

Monica and Chandler got all way through to season 4 without a second glance at each other, queue Ross and Emily’s wedding. They become this couple that you can’t imagine without one another. Sometimes, the right one is already in your life, you just need to take a look around for a second and think. Do it!
Long term

Are you going the same way, because if you’re not it could spell the end. Phoebe was head over heels when she broke up with Mike in season 9 – we were also devastated! The reason was he was jaded from a previous marriage and didn’t ever want to go through or risk going through it again, whereas Phoebe knew she wanted to marry one day. She understood their goals didn’t align and knew she wouldn’t be happy – sad.
But, thank goodness events gave them both perspective and Mike a chance to realise their relationship was different. They eventually marry in season 10 – we need a tissue!
Timing is everything

Ross and Rachel, Rachel and Ross...

… just how many times did they get together and break up, consider something more then decide on being friends? Countless! Between season 3 and 10, they never got together officially for more than a coffee to go (unless of course you count the super-quick reunion after Bonnie shaved her head in season 4, or the drunken ‘I do’ in Vegas in season 6). Sometimes, the right person is there at just the wrong time, but if you see it through it could all work out and she could get off the plane to London!

One final thing… if they’re your lobster, it will all come good in the end.
